An MCP server is a process that implements the Model Context Protocol to expose a set of capabilities — tools, resources, and prompts — to any MCP-capable agent. Examples include servers for file systems, databases, browsers, issue trackers, and developer tooling.
Because MCP is a shared standard, one server can be reused across different agents and clients. That portability is why MCP servers have become a core building block for serious agent workflows.
