A terminal multiplexer lets you run many shell sessions within a single terminal window, split them into panes, and — crucially — keep them alive when you disconnect. tmux and Zellij are the best-known examples.
Multiplexers matter for remote and long-running work: detach from a session, close your laptop, reconnect later, and your processes are still running. Some modern terminals build multiplexing in; others rely on tmux.
